In the fall of 1999 the Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung had reported about the work of Susanne and Arnd Herz in Zimbabwe. Arnd Herz MD, a pediatrician and specialist in pediatric infectious diseases, had spent several weeks in different children hospitals in Harare. His wife, Susanne, had worked on an AIDS research project with ZAPP (Zimbabwe Aids Prevention Program), a joint program of the University of Zimbabwe and Stanford University. Through their daily work they were directly exposed to the extremely difficult fate of AIDS orphans in Zimbabwe.

The Herz HD Stiftung has started a relief work rright after the return of their son and daughter-in-law. During visits to Zimbabwe in 2000 and summer 2004 the couple Doris and Hans Herz became convinced that there are trustworthy local organizations present in the country, such as the J.F.Kapnek Charitable Trust and the Order of the Dominican Sisters. Those organizations allow for the direct local distribution of donations with the assurance that they will be used for their intended purpose.
