School books for everyone

Dr. Greg Powell, the managing director of the Kapnek organization, distributes funds on behalf of the Herz HD foundation. Here he is pictured delivering 1226 textbooks to the Mashonganyika School. The German ambassador, Dr. Blumberger-Sauerteig, also attended the ceremony. Although the school has no electricity and is in need of an additional well, schoolbooks were found to be even more of a priority. The students, teachers and parents of the Eichenddorff School in Heidelberg-Rohrbach, Germany collected 5000 Euro towards the purchase of these textbooks.

Mail from Heidelberg

Heidelberg, September 2005

The foundation facilitates a partnership between the Eichendorff School and the Mashonganyika School in Zimbabwe. The first mail from Africa arrived after the summer vacation. The teachers in Heidelberg organized a three day workshop entitled, "Learning about Africa through Fables", during which ten different classes learned about life in Africa. The workshop introduced students to traditional houses, food, animals, music and the geography of Zimbabwe.

Munich, March 2006

An auction of Shona sculptures at the Hypo-Vereinsbank in Munich
generated funds for 350 orphans
Happy faces of buyers were numerous at the Herz Foundation’s auction.

The Hypo-Vereinsbank in Munich generously offered to exhibit the Shona sculptures for 3 weeks. The sculptures were auctioned on March 21st, 2006 by the very engaged, humorous auctioneer Mr. Tilman Kraus. Every original piece was introduced by Mrs. Doris Herz. It was apparent that she had a hard time parting from some of these sculptures, which she had hand selected with her husband, Hans Herz, on one of her trips to Zimbabwe. Of course she understood that the objective of the auction was to raise money for the orphans. The buyers, all private collectors, bought as many as five sculptures each. All pieces remaining after the auction, were sold successfully after the event.

The success of the auction can be mainly attributed to all of the sponsors and volunteers without whom the event would not have been possible.

Advisory Board

Heidelberg, Juli 2004

On June 30th, 2004 an advisory board was set up to support and advice the management of the foundation and master future challenges. Besides the founders Doris Herz, Hans Herz and Dr. Peter Thomsen the board includes Prof. Wolfgang Böker, Dr. Arnd Herz and Dr. Arndt Overlack. The members of the board, coming from the field of medicine and law offer a broad range of experiences and have been close to the Herz family for many years.
