SIM-Rally 2002

20313 km for AIDS orphans
This Herz HD Stiftung benefit rally had 674 participants and was a full success

Heidelberg, September 2002

On September 14th, more than 100 volunteers organized this rally in which racers of all ages on bicycles and wheelchairs participated for a good cause. Every kilometer equaled 1 Euro for AIDS orphans in Zimbabwe. The atmosphere on race day was extraordinary, everybody wanted to contribute. The average participant biked 30 km (19 miles), while our records were set by two champions: 158 km (100 miles) for the bicycle races, 90 km for the wheelchair races. 60 sponsors and businesses donated € 20.000 to help pay educational expenses for 338 children for 1 year.

Visit of Dr. Greg Powell in Heidelberg

During a trip to the Netherlands Dr. Powell stopped by in Heidelberg in
order to report on the progress of our projects. So far, under the supervision
of CPS, educational expenses were paid for 271 children, including 137 girls and 134 boys. Those children go to 23 schools in an industrial suburb of Harare called Highfield. 163 children attend primary schools and 108 children attend high schools or secondary schools. For 215 children the mandatory school uniforms were purchased with the help of donations.

Dr. Powell also reported about the progress of the project “Foster Families”.
CPS arranges about 5 of those sponsorships every month. The social workers from CPS together with volunteers from the community select the parents for foster children.
The willingness to take babies into their family is high. The annual costs for those sponsorships currently are DM 350 = US$ 175.

presents the check from the benefit concert

With this check of DM 10.000,-- the Herz HD Stiftung has collected more than DM 100.000.-- since September 1999. The foundation has committed DM 50.000,-- to the Child Protection Society(CPS) to finance school expenses (fees, learning expenses and uniforms) for 500 children for the coming school year .

Orphan Homes

The sheer number of orphans makes orphanages an unviable long-term solution. Most homes, therefore, serve only as intermediate solutions until a foster home is available.

In Chinyaradzo and Vimbainesu CPS cares for about 100 children ranging from birth to 16 years. Because of the hyper-inflation in Zimbabwe the cost for these homes is unsustainable for CPS. One child requires DM 420 = US$ 210 per annum or DM 35 = US$ 17 per month or DM 1,20 = US$ 0,60 daily.
